L'église

La paroisse a été fondée en 1929 suite à une subdivision d'avec la paroisse St. Léon de Westmount. Le style de l'église diffère énormément des autres églises catholiques de Montréal.

Quand vient le temps de construire une nouvelle église dans le riche quartier Westmount, on n’hésite pas à se distinguer en choisissant un style néo-gothique d’inspiration américaine. C’est d’ailleurs une firme d’architectes de Boston, MacInnis & Walsh, qui en signera les plans.

Ce qui étonne le plus à la vue de cette église de grandeur moyenne, 3 500 m2 (37,660 pi2), c’est la position unique de son clocher : son carillon est en effet juché au sommet d’une énorme tour carrée posée à la croisée du transept, et non pas en façade comme dans la quasi-totalité des églises catholiques. On voit là, sur le plan esthétique, une caractéristique propre aux temples protestants.

L'intérieur de l'église est très simple et très sobre, à l’anglaise. La charpente de sa voûte est apparente. Elle est dotée de vitraux intéressants et rappelle l’église St. Vincent Ferrier, de New York.

L'orgue

L'orgue, installé la même année que la construction de la nouvelle église, a été construit par la maison Casavant Frères Ltée. Le concert inaugural a été donné par Pietro Yon de la cathédrale St. Patrick de New York. Lynnwood Farnam, alors directeur du départment d'orgue au Curtis Institute of Music de Philadelphie, a donné plusieurs concerts sur cet instrument.

À l'été 1972, l'orgue a été nettoyé et recuiré par François Caron alors représentant de la maison Casavant Frères Ltée pour la région de Montréal.

En 1989, à l'occasion du 60è anniversaire de la paroisse, l'orgue a fait l'objet d'une révision complète par la même compagnie au coût d'approximativement $86,000. Les travaux les plus importants ont été le recuirage de tous les sommiers, des mécanismes de traction des jeux ainsi que des moteurs d'expression. Un combinateur électronique a été installé et le pédalier a été refait. Enfin, l'instrument a été ré-harmonisé afin qu'il produise un son plus clair et plus puissant.

La re-dédicace de l'orgue a eu lieu le 9 avril 1989. Une semaine plus tard, le directeur musical de l'église, Philipps Motley, a donné le concert inaugural.

The church

Ascension of Our Lord parish was formed in 1929 as the English-language outgrowth from St. Leon de Westmount parish. The building style of the church is quite different from the one usually used for catholic churches in Montreal.

When it was time to build a new church in Westmount, a wealthy suburb of Montreal, it was decided to mark off by choosing a neo-gothic style of American inspiration. Plans were drawn up by MacInnis & Walsh, a Boston firm.

What is unique in this medium-sized church (37,600 sq. ft. or 3 500 m2) is the location of its bell tower: its carillon is located on top of a large square tower built over the transept crossing, and not in front of the church as it is usually the case for all catholic churches. On the aesthetics point of view, it is a specific characteristic of Protestant churches.

The inside of the church is very simple and very sober, in the English style. The framework of the nave is visible. The church has interesting stained glass windows and is reminiscent of St. Vincent Ferrier church in New York City.

The organ

The organ installed the same year that the new church was completed, was built by Casavant Frères Ltée. The inaugural concert was played by Pietro Yon of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Lynnwood Farnam, at the time head of the Organ Department of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, played several recitals on the instrument.

During the summer of 1972, the organ was cleaned and releathered by François Caron, who was the Montreal representative of Casavant Frères Ltée at the time.

In 1989, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the parish, the organ was once again completely restored by the same company, at a cost of approximately $86,000. The major part of the renovations was the releathering of all the pouchboards, stop actions and expression motors. SSLL switching was installed and the pedalboard was re-shoed. The instrument was also revoiced to make it brighter and louder.

The re-dedication of the organ took place on April 9, 1989. One week later, Phillips Motley, who was, at the time, the music director at the church, played the inaugural recital.
