The parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Désir (Our Lady of Good Desire) was founded in 1889. The church, built in 1915 upon plans drawn by architect Joseph-Pierre Ouellet from Quebec City, is classified as « religious heritage ». The wooden church has not been modified over the years. In 1949, a rear gallery was built.
The organ
On July 17, 1952, the churchwardens decided to purchase a $6,000 organ from Walter F. Shaw from Melrose, MA. The three-manual instrument with a theater console has 14 real stops and 60 unified stops. It was built by the United States Pipe Organ Co. and, when it was purchased, it was installed in a theater in Philadelphia. The organ is installed in the vault. It was the first pipe organ to be installed on the North Shore and was blessed by Bishop Napoléon-Alexandre Labrie, bishop of Baie-Comeau, on October 22. The inaugural concert took place on October 26, 1952 and was played by Rev. Léon Destroismaisons.
In 1966, lightning struck and the instrument was badly damaged. Repairs, costing $6,000., were completed just on time for the Christmas Midnight mass. Today, the organ is installed on the nave floor, on the left side of the church. Unfortunately, it is unplayable.
The stop list, furnished by the organ builder with the purchasing contract, gives the stop names according to usual church terminology. On the console, stops are identified according to theater organs. Because a few stop tablets are missing, the exact stop list cannot be definitely established.
