L'église

Les racines de cette congrégation remontent à 1828 lorsque John et Mary Baldwin s'établirent à Berea en provenance de la Nouvelle-Angleterre. Quoique les services religieux débutèrent en 1832, l'église méthodiste de Berea ne fut formée que 11 ans plus tard, soit en 1843. En 1852, un terrain fut acheté pour y construire la First United Methodist. Elle était construite de grès et, pour plusieurs années, elle fut connue sous le nom de la Old Stone. Durant cette période, l'église méthodiste allemande Emmanuel croissait et se réunissait dans ce qui est aujourd'hui la chapelle du collège Baldwin-Wallace. En 1899, l'église épiscopalienne méthodiste était construite au coin des rues Seminary et Spring. Après plusieurs années de discussions, l'église épiscopalienne méthodiste et l'église méthodiste allemande Emmanuel se fusionnèrent pour former l'église méthodiste de Berea. La fusion fut célébrée le 18 mai 1947. En 1968, l'église méthodiste de Berea et la congrégation Evangelical United Brethren se fusionnèrent pour devenir l'église unie méthodiste. L'église maintenant connue sous le nom de l'église unie méthodiste de Berera fut inauguré en 1952 et s'élève au coin des rues Seminary et Spring là où la première église épiscopalienne méthodiste existait.

The church

The roots of this congregation go back to 1828, when John and Mary Baldwin first settled in Berea from New England. Although they held religious meetings beginning in 1832, the Berea United Methodist Church was not organized for 11 years, in 1843. In 1852, land was purchased for the First United Methodist building. It was made from Berea sandstone and for many years was known as the Old Stone Church. By this time, the German Emmanuel Methodist Church was growing, meeting in what is today, the Baldwin-Wallace College Chapel. In 1899, the First Methodist Episcopal Church was built on the corner of Seminary and Spring. After years of discussion, First Methodist and Emmanuel Methodist joined to become The Methodist Church of Berea. Sunday, May 18, 1947, the two churches celebrated the union. In 1968, a union of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren denominations took place to form the United Methodist Church. The building now known as The United Methodist Church of Berea was dedicated in 1952 and stands at the corner of Seminary and Spring where the First Methodist Episcopal Church once stood.
